Altace belongs to a group of drugs called ACE inhibitors i.e. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme. The generic name of Altace is Ramipril. Altace is used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failures and it is also used to improve survival rate post heart attacks. It is generally indicated for patients of age 55 and above. It can be used for other purposes as well, ones that are not listed here.
The Angiotensin Converting Enzyme produces a chemical known as Angiotensin II, which causes the muscles in the arteries (including those of the heart), to contract. This eventually builds up blood pressure. Altace (ramipril) are ACE inhibitors that reduce the activity and the production of Angiotensin II, thereby relaxing the muscles of the arteries and lowering down the blood pressure. Ramipril got approved by the FDA in 1991.
